Question Please check our martial arts infographic

    Hi,

We have made a big infographic with the belt ranks from 12 martial arts (131 belts in total!).

Hope some of you might have a minute to check if everything is 100% correct.

    Hi Tim

In Aikido we don't use colours just white until you get your black belt, and there are more dan 6th Dans actually.

    Nice work anyway.

Thanks, but doesn't it depend on the club?

What is the max. Dan belt?

    Hello Tim,
Yes, the colored belts depends on the club, I think some use them mainly for children to encourage them to promote.
As for the Dan grade, please find in the following link http://www.aikikai.or.jp/eng/information/leader.html the instructors of the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, the highest is actually a 9th Dan. There have been a few 10 Dan like Seiseki Abe, Koichi Tohei, Michio Hikitsuchi, Tomiki Kenji and Minoru Mochizuki .

Just to throw in my two bits:

Belt colours are variable. For example, at my first aikido dojo the colour scheme was white, yellow, orange, green, purple, brown, black. In Australia it went white (6th-1st kyu), black. In my current dojo group it is white, brown (3rd-1st kyu), black.
As for your shotokan list, the JKA currently uses white, blue, yellow, orange, green (6th & 5th kyu), purple, brown (3rd-1st kyu), black. I remember when the blue belt replaced the white belt for 9th kyu.
I can't speak for other organisations, but imagine similar variations.

As I said over on the judo forums, "jujutsu" is unclear. It could be any of a number of older styles, many of which don't use the dan/kyu system at all.

Judo varies from country to country and even in organizations within a country.

I'm not sure what the point of the graphic is anyway.

Thanks a lot for your comments. I have written them all down for the next version of the graphic.

If you want to add a section for Shito Ryu (karate), the Hayashi-ha uses (at least in the branch I was in):

    White
    Yellow
    Orange
    Blue
    Purple
    Green
    Brown
    Black
    Yours in Budo,

    Edit to insert red belt:

It's a neat idea and the graphic is very well done.

My only thought is to put which organization the style listed shows. For example, long ago when I studied the Seidokan version of Aikido the belts were white/blue/purple/brown/black, and there is a Yip Man lineage school of Wing Chun near by and the sash colors are yellow/orange/green/blue/brown/black

I think there is too much varience in belt colors for it to be definitive, but does give a student an idea of the different levels used by various styles.
