    Default UK 40th Anniversary Celebration.

I had a great time; everyone seems to enjoy the seminar; and my mum loved the demo - so I would judge it a success.

Highlights for me: Aosaka Sensei showing that he can still deliver the goods in his sixties. He was my original inspiration in SK, and since I'm a decade younger I'm still inspired to train harder and get fitter.

Kawashima Sensei and Hombu team, of course.

But, most of all, training and partying with comrades from all over Europe, as well as Japan.

This seems like a new start for SK in the U.K., and it's great to see new faces step up and take on responsibility. We have built up strong relationships with other European kenshi over the years, and maybe it's a good time to solidify those links and take it to the next level.

I'm just throwing out ideas - but it does seem as though we have a solid core of people who can make this happen -

It was an enjoyable course with great technical instruction from the guest senseis'

The highlight for me was Aosaka Sensei's juho master class for the senior grades

It was also good to see the hand of friendship extended to Bournemouth Shorinji kempo Club

Thank you to all who helped organise the event

    Default feedback

The most important part of building and running any organisation is good communications.

So please feedback your experience of the event, good, bad, or indifferent.

Bear in mind that this is a public forum, so if your have any real concerns or complaints I suggest you ask your branch master to contact the U.K. federation directly and ask for clarification. There are always going to be glitches, and there is usually a genuine reason for them.

So, don't be afraid to express yourself - just do it respectfully.

This is sophistry, pure and simple.

... the 40th anniversary of the UK Shorinji Kempo Federation was recently held over two beautiful days in London (August 2nd and 3rd, 2014).

The UK Shorinji Kempo Federation, whose first branch was established by Toshiaki Yoshida in 1974, turned forty this year.

And you? BSKF was started in 1989? 1977? 1976?

These early branches formed the British Shorinji Kempo Association (BSKA) in 1976. The BSKA was accepted into the now defunct Martial Arts Commission (MAC) in 1977. The BSKA became the British Shorinji Kempo Federation (BSKF) when the MAC disbanded in 1989.

    Hi Dave,

In point of fact, I got my front from the same source as you. I graduated and went to Nigeria. You will too, one day.

Kari, the BSKA and the BSKF are one and the same organisation. A name change isn't difficult to understand surely?

Absolutely. BSKA, became BSKF, became UKSKF. Evolution. Survival of the fittest?

Which organisation has the most original members?

This I understand. But it is not 40 years old. See the other thread for their 40th anniversary.

    Default Question?

    How did BSKF become UKSKF?
If WSKO did not allow BSKF to continue, but
the BSKF decided to continue, then it didn't
    then become UKSKF?
BSKF have therefore existed way before the
    UKSKF was formed surely?
As to some of the comments I've seen around,
the UKSKF's idea of the 'history of UK SK' is
incorrect and looks to me as a whitewash of
    the true history of SK.

Peter, you may have some things the wrong way around. I'll try to clarify.
First person to teach Shorinji Kempo in UK is Yoshida Sensei, on the South Coast, in 1974.
WSKO send Mizuno Sensei to UK to become official Shorinji Kempo representative later in 1974 and the various branches formed the BSKA 1976. Shorinji Kempo has been taught in UK since 1974, by the same people.
WSKO ask BSKA to change name, and they become BSKF. Something to do with an "Asociation" being different from a "Federation". This brings them into line with other countries, such as Sweden and France.
Things go happilly for many years.
BSKF re-write their charter to clarify their liabilities and responsibilities and protect themselves from possible litigation following an edict from WSKO that would require them to sack Mizuno Sensei without adequate cause.
WSKO cease to recognise BSKF and seek to prevent them using the name. Court proceedings take a while to establish whether BSKF can carry on calling themselves that, or whether the SK part is property of WSKO.
BSKF win the case and continue to "trade" under the name they have used for around 30 years (40 if you include the previous name).
UKSKF is chosen as a new name for those members in the UK who decided to remain with WSKO.
UKSKF celebrate 40 years of Shorinji Kempo in the UK.
BSKF celebrate 40 years of Shorinji Kempo in the UK. Both are correct.
But... both organisations claim to have been teaching for forty years. In this, neither is totally correct, neither is completely wrong.

One thing is quite clear to me. Any newcomer chancing upon this discussion, or any of a number from the last 5 years will come away with an unfavourable impression of the people and practice of Shorinji Kempo. Snide comments and shoulders carrying chips don't attract students, nor do they illustrate the guiding principles of the system as taught by the Founder... something which all current members claim to be following, whether they use a "UK" suffix or a "British" suffix. Or any other nation for that matter.
