We also got only a single day with a Verbal Judo trainer. When compared to how much time we spent on the range... It seemed a little disproportionate.

Considering how much time I spent actually talking to a wide variety of people in varying degrees of mental states (every single day) versus the number of times I had need to use my sidearm (a handful of times and I'm talking just drawing, not pulling the trigger) I think all our officers could've used a bit more time on the verbal side of the skillset. I'm not saying reduce the amount of time on the range... just that we all could have used better verbal interaction skills on a daily basis.

    Hello Matthew,

Could you elaborate a little on what you did in the verbal judo training course. I ask as one who spent ten years teaching cross-cultural negotiation to Japanese students (all mature students who were bureaucrats or company employees) in graduate school studying management.

    Best wishes,

What Brian posted actually looks almost exactly like what our curriculum was. Mind you it was over ten years ago that I had it... however, I believe all five of the universal truths of verbal judo shown on the site above were covered in the class. After a morning of lecture, slides and discussion we then had some scenarios that we worked our way through.

It really was a wonderful class and a great tool for all of us. I just wish there had been more.

Default Black Panther does Force on Force

Black Panther leader Quanell X undergoes Force on Force. Major props to the man for stepping up and speaking out on his experience:

Folks please share these videos widely. They are critical in demonstrating how people with very hard positions can gain some understanding.
