Default judo throws that looks similar?

    Hi all,

I was wondering some moves looks similar but, not the same.

I am training with mostly brown belts in my dojo and I have to keep up with my white belt equally to them as they have no beginners class for seniors.

Even they don't know the difference sometimes.

e.g. morote seoinage and ippon seoinage.

sasae tsurikomi asahi and tai otoshi

Marote Seionage and Ippon Seionage are different hookup (grips ect.....) marote= 2 handed. Ippon is single wrist grab with his arm in the crook of your other elbow.

Sasae and tai o toshi are not a like. Sasae is like like hiza guruma but you check the ankle and not below the knee. You could use sasae to setup a Tai otoshi.

Type the throw name in question into google or get a copy if Kodokan Judo by Kano. That will help with you vocabulary.

Sorry for the wrong name. Yes it was Hiza guruma and sasae tsurikomi ashi

It's so hard to remember it if some moves ''looks'' similar.

At least Judo has names. Names make it easier to remember. It is easier once you learn what the names mean.

When I switched to Gracie Jiu Jitsu I found they don't have names.

Take chokes. In Judo you have chokes with names like this:

Gyaku Juji Jime (Reverse Cross Choke)
Nami Juji Jime (Normal Cross Choke)
Kata Juji Jime (Half Cross Choke)
    Hadaka Jime (Rear Naked Choke)
Kata Ha Jime (Single Wing Choke)
Kata Te Jime (One hand Choke)
Okuri Eri Jime (Sliding Lapel Choke)
Ryo Te Jime (Two Handed Choke)
    Sankaku Jime (Triangle Choke)
Sode Guruma Jime (Sleev Wheel Choke)
    Tsukkomi Jime (Thrust Choke)

In Gracie JiuJitsu you have Rear Naked Choke and Triangle Choke and there is a variation on Sode Guruma Jime called Ezekiel Choke. Everything else plus hundreds of other variations are all called 'Choke'. Sometimes EVERYTHING is just called "The Thing You Do".

You will eventually get the Judo names. Don't worry about it. The names are a good thing, they allow to communicate and take notes.

Try taking notes after a BJJ seminar.

I've never done BJJ but in reading I have come across lots of other names, including bow and arrow choke, cross choke, guillotine, etc. BJJ has names for lots of things that judo does not also.

Also to answer the original question, sasae tsurikomi ashi and hiza guruma are superficially similar but different throws. As implied by "tsurikomi", sasae tsurikomi ashi has a lifting motion to it, the kuzushi is somewhat upwards and you are blocking the forward motion at the ankle. Hiza guruma uses a wheeling motion about the knee ("guruma" means wheel), the kuzushi is more forward and your body positioning is more to the side. Of course in practice there is a continuum of actions between the two. But the difference is not simply whether you place your foot at the ankle or the knee.

If you learn the various Japanese words that make up the names, you can actually figure out quite a bit about the throw. Most of the names are straight-forward descriptions with a few exceptions.

A lot of the competition guys and non-Gracies have come up with names for things. Also some of the old techniques have names like the loop choke and the wheel choke, Hells Strangle is called the Crucifix etc.....But a TON of stuff still don't have names.

I would give stuff names just so I could keep a training journal. Funny thing though is the throws are still called by their old Judo names. B.J.J. = Basically Just Judo.
