Default What does the dojo mean to you?

For me, the dojo is wonderful, special place. I'm almost more at home there than I am in my house. I put my thoughts in this blog http://budobum.blogspot.com/2016/03/dojo.html

What does the dojo mean to you? Is it just a place to train and sweat? Or is it something more?

    Mr. Boylan,

I enjoyed the article. I would like to ask at what point did the dojo take on that meaning? Recently stepping onto a new dojo floor I have felt trepidation, doubt, excitement, joy, fear, all jumbled. At what point do you think you began to feel what you described in your article? Honestly interested.

    Mr. Baker,

Growing to feel this way about the dojo was a gradual process. My first dojo really felt like home after about a year of training. I had to learn all the local etiquette and expectations before I felt completely comfortable there. After that, I gradually became more and more comfortable at other dojo that I visited, as I realized what part of our local dojo customs were really common budo customs that I could rely on pretty much anywhere. By the time I first went to Japan, I'd been practicing for 4 years and the dojo had become a second home for me. It really sank in when I moved to Japan and was able to fit into the dojo culture with such ease, even as I struggled with Japanese culture outside of the dojo.
