Default Demonstration Budo vs. Training Budo vs Doing Budo

We talk about training and demonstrations as something different from actually doing aikido? Are they though? How are they related and what makes them different or similar? That's the subject of this blog post:

What do you think? Are they very different? Why?

    Good read. As usual.

I liked the article as well - and I think it illustrates well the way things are generally done in Japan and abroad.

I do things somewhat differently, however. I do regard embu as practice, nothng more. We bow to each other (and a tokonoma, if one is present), but never to any dignitaries or other teachers or audience. They are, for a moment, guests in my dojo. I'll return it when our practice time is over.

I have actually changed the 'program' back stage on my students. On several occasions, I've said, "I don't feel like doing that technique. Let me teach you something else" and I've taught my student a new kata or two back-stage - no room to practice, just the sequence.

I expect them to do it perfectly - the honor of the school is at stake, in public view. If they've been training principles rather than technique (another blog subject, IIRC), There shouldn't be a problem.

Sir, you are tough master. It would be a pleasure and an honor to train with you.
