Question What's the meaning of "ryomi"? (Dave Lowry literature)

    Hello everyone!

I really need help to understanding a concept that I found in the book "Traditions: Essays on the Japanese Martial Arts and Ways", by Dave Lowry,

It's about the concept of "Ryomi". Lowry describes Ryomi as follows (page 11):

"Ryomi is an intense, ongoing process of self-evaluation for the martial artist or anyone else who hopes to make something worthwhile of his life."

I'm having trouble because I don't find the same term in other sources, and in this particular case the author does not put the kanji for search.

    Thank you,
    Caio

    Hello,

Mr Lowry is a member of E-Budo, so I suggest you send him a private message and ask him to discuss the concept here, including the Chinese characters.

    Best wishes,

What an interesting point. I didn't find it in any of my dictionaries either.

    Playing with possible transliteration differences...

    涼味 (りょうみ) 1. cool; coolness

    But that's not it.

I would have expected perhaps the following instead:

反省 (はんせい) 1. reflection; reconsideration; introspection; meditation; contemplation

Please do let me know if you hear a response from Mr. Lowry.

@P. Goldsbury: Thank you for the answer! Certainly I will contact him.

@mkrueger: WOW!!! Thank you for searching! I believe you "unraveled the riddle" with the last definition. At least it seems to be very close to the book context. A quick search of the kanji on Google led me to "hansei". Do you know if there is any difference between "ryomi " and "hansei"? It would be "ryomi" most used in martial arts context?

Anyway, I will contact Dave Lowry and I'll let you know if there is any response! Again, thank you.
