Default Katori Shinto ryu Budo Kyohan - English Edition

    Dear all,

for those of you who are interested in Katori Shinto-ryu:

The English translation of the 1941 published "Budo Kyohan", written by Sugino Yoshio-sensei and Ito Kikue-sensei, will be soon available on Amazon.

Having been taught for almost 600 years, Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō Ryū is one of the oldest Japanese martial arts. This is the first English translation of the book, which was originally published in Japan in 1941. With its many pictures and texts it presents the Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō Ryū’s basic techniques and kata with the sword (iai-jutsu, ken-jutsu), bō (bō-jutsu) and the naginata (naginata-jutsu) in great depth. This book also describes the relevance and the aim of budō and budō training methods to the reader, as well as the essential basics of budō (kamae, ma-ai, metsuke, zanshin, munen-muso, etc.). Additionally, it provides information on the origin and history of the Katori Shintō Ryū style, which was founded by Iizasa Chōisai Ienao sensei (1387 – 1488). This book is complemented by historical and biographical texts written by Yoshio Sugino. Both the 20th Soke of the Katori Shintō Ryū Yasusada Iizasa sensei and Yukihiro Sugino sensei have also kindly provided a preface.

The German version was already released a couple of years ago and now the English one follows.

    Best regards,

    Hello Michael,

Is this book very different from Warrior Tradition?

There are other people better qualified to discuss the specifics in detail, but I would say it is very different from Katori Shinto-ryu- Warrior Tradition. Warrior Tradition serves as kind of an introductory overview of the art as taught in Narita. The Kyohan, on the other hand was written more like a textbook of the Omote level material for people actually training in the ryu. Of course being written in 1941 and coming from a different line of shihan, there are obviously going to be differences from what is taught today in Narita.

    For what it's worth,

    Hello.

The book "Katori Shinto Ryu budo kyohan" was written by Yoshio Sugino sensei and his wife Ito Kikoue in 1941 under guidance of Iizasa Kinjiro soke and some of that time shihan - Shiina Ichizo, Kanai Saku, Kamagata Minosuke, Tamai Saido, Hayashi Yazaemon and Isobe Kohei.
I have found some pictures of same book in Russian (which was published this year).
    It looks like that

    --
The book contains some brief information about the school (mostly known), some about the weapons used. The main part is a full guidance to omote waza of the school with photos and explanations of all movements, positions and strikes, approved by that time soke.
It differs greatly from the 1977 book of Risuke Otake sensei, who even hadn't entered the school at the moment the book of Sugino sensei was published.

    Best regards,
    Nick

Nick - Ito Kikue was not Sugino's wife. In fact, they had different instructors - her's was Motomiya (Hongu) Toranosuke (also the student of Shiigi Keibun and Noda Seizan) whereas Sugino Yoshio primarily studied with, as you wrote, a number of other shihan, chief among them, Shiina Ichizo. Among other things, this illustrates a collegial relationship between the various shihan,. With different instructors, Sugino and Ito were able, under the auspices of Iizasa Kinjiro, to collaborate in this work.

This has no bearing on the thread, but dang Ellis, you're like a walking, talking encyclopedia sometimes!
