The komainu I have seen (or seen pictures of) have always been only the color of the material they were made of; stone, wood, jade, etc. The exception was a set of small Chinese shishi I once saw for sale in an antique shop that had red bodies, green faces, and golden manes and tails.

The two sets I bought in Okinawa were the color of the materials (amber and marble) but there is a Chinese restaurant in on route 22 east of Pittsburgh that has two foot tall gold colored one in front. I am pretty sure that is not just the color of the materials.
