And for the out of the field and into the very much unknown.

In Norse mythology there were 3 women that looked after a tree. 2 hid their faces but one did not. What was the Godesses name of Norse myth?

As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Now which one of the posters is right?

Google is fun to find this out with. Depends on the site, but look hard enough and you may find it.

Of course, the Swiss have never claimed to have invented clocks/watches; China, Egypt, Rome...many civilizations have early roles in horology.

In fact, a certain countryman of yours -- one John Harrison -- made tremendous contributions to the art of accurizing portable timekeeping devices.

But the Swiss did pick up where the French, Italians, English, and Americans left off, and perfected the mechanical wristwatch. For that, and their chocolate (which they also didn't invent but merely perfected), they can be justly proud.

(Did I ever mention that I'm part Swiss on my father's side? And a Swiss-certified watchmaker?)

Same way as the greeks invented a steam engine. They couldn't figure out what to do with it, and indeed didn't have the metallurgy to build a good one, but they did invent it...

Pardon the presumption, but this thread has been silent too long, so as one who got the last question right, I think, I'll post the next one.

What piece of music is instantly identifiable by one word in it? The word being "SLAIN" sung at the top of your voice, almost shouted.

I'll give you one hint, and it's that the work refers to a story in the Old Testament of the Bible.

    I wondered if it could be from a national anthem. Seems like quite a few Biblical references to "the slain" figure in various national anthems. Perhaps this one, the longest national anthem in the world (158 stanzas long), for Greece.. which has the second verse;
From the graves of our slain
    Shall thy valor prevail
    As we greet thee again-
    Hail, Liberty! Hail!
See 7 more of the verses here, together with the world's shortest national anthem, from Japan.

I'll think of a proper sig when I get a minute...

Pointless bump and a new Q:

In what recreational sport would you use a "preacher"?

Weight training. Not a sport, but it contains a preacher curl (and hence a preacher bench).

In order to maintain air speed velocity swallow needs to beat his wings 43 times per second. Am I right? This could be swallowed by the African swallow, but not Europe, that is my point of view...

    No, you're not right.

A hummingbird may beat its wings at 43BPS (and some much faster than that), but a swallow? That would be more in the 15 - 20BPS range.
