There really is no short answer to your question. I would recommend you get a copy of “Shinto: The Kami Way” by Sokyo Ono. It is published by the Charles E. Tuttle Co. and can be found at Amazon.com or barnes&noble.com. It is a short read on the subject and is quite informative.
