As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Aaron, no worries. I agree... and it's about keeping E-Budo up and running, and continuing to serve as a substantial martial arts database.

Aaron, if you think this a scam, then by all means find someone else to take over the effort! I DON'T know John Lindsey nor anything about his employment or income status. I DO know that I want e-Budo to stay up & running, & as no one else was doing anything about it, I decided to contact other forumites to see if anyone else was interested. Seems like a mixed bag.And this sounds suspiciously like a scam to me-no offense meant, but I know John, and the mere idea that he's unable to afford $600...what with his, erm.....overseas employment is difficult, though not impossible, for me to comprehend. Likewise, I know Cady, and Professor Goldsbury, and Nathan, and Joe Svinth, and I'm sure Chris Li would vouch for you-but I don't know you. I also think you'll easily collect more than $690 this way, and see no indication of how that extra funding would be utilized...since you seem to have established some sort of relationship with the people at Orionweb, maybe we'd all be better served if you told them the state of things with e-budo, and insisted on more time to get a hold of John Lindsey.
I am the owner of a computer consulting company ([URL=www.catii.com[/URL]) which my wife & I have run since 1986. I started training in martial arts in 1951 - judo & European fencing - & still train in MJER iaido & SMR jodo. Feel free to contact either of my Sensei (kaifukan@hawaii.rr.com) & (quintinchambers@yahoo.com) to find anything else you would like to know. I've also been on this forum for quite a few years, in case you didn't notice.
On the amount collected, if you check a few messages back, you'll see that I suggested that anyone who could afford $50 should send that to either my PayPal of corporate post office box. Once the nominal $640 is collected ($50 will be my contribution), I will send a check to Bill at Orionweb to catch up on the arrears plus six months in advance for hosting services. I can certainly post a photo of the check, & I've already posted Bill's e-mail for anyone who wants to check with him. He is willing to work with me because I'm the only person who has shown any interest.
Aaron, I just got out of the hospital last week after major emergency surgery, so I have a bit of time to spend on this problem while I'm recuperating. But if you want to do nothing but snipe, please start your own thread! I'm perfectly willing to have someone else take this over, AS LONG AS SOMETHING IS ACTUALLY GETTING DONE!
Disgustedly,

Scam, misguided good-will, or pure intent - I am willing to chuck in 20$ for a site. Regardless of my personal (terrible) finances, I'll be contributing as a nod to a site that I think has too many valuable discussions in the archives to let be lost. (On the other hand, with all the spiders, etc. out there, isn't all of the internet archived somewhere?)
As for not understanding why someone has stepped back - there are lots of reasons and no one is really due an explanation (the way I look at it, as someone that has run a non-profit with no help). Sometimes, you just want your children to grow up and move on. Sometimes burnout. Sometimes something you invested in isn't what you want anymore. Break camp and move on.
Life happens.
My 20 will be in the mail.
'Leaves fall.'
I'd be happy to contribute financially to this. Is there anyone willing to take on the technical aspects of this?

Don't know John--except that I am grateful to him for the site.
But as long as we are speculating--maybe he was hopeing for someone to help out?
If he wanted the site "killed" he could have done so at any time with a phone call/e-mail to OrionWeb.
I've started projects that I eventually had little time for--for various reasons--and I was both pleasently surprised and grateful when others sort of "adopted" them.
In this case all anyone is talking about is making sure that a bill gets paid so those folks that use/enjoy/find value--pick whatever term you prefer here--can continue to do so.
It's little more than a "stop-gap" to give the site some breathing room until things get sorted out.
I get what you are saying. I just don't think anyone would have a problem with the "breathing room" Ken is working on.
If I'm wrong, I hope John--should I ever meet him--will accept my sincere apology and my explaination that I acted out of sense of gratitude.

Currently on "Injured/Reserve" list due to a scathing Sarcasm pile-up.
I'm still wondering what Dr Stupid would make of this. (In-joke for E-Budo old-timers). It is threads like this that make E-Budo a resource that must be saved.

Good question, Harlan. I've done a number of searches looking for an archive like that, but no luck so far.On the other hand, with all the spiders, etc. out there, isn't all of the internet archived somewhere?
As an Adobe reseller, I've also tried to capture the entire Web-site as a PDF using Acrobat Professional, but the software crashes long before the job is finished. Not sure why this is happening as I've captured 800-MB sites with no problem. Is there a moderator who can give us an idea of how large e-Budo has become?

Umm, no. First, the Web-site isn't owned by Orionweb - they just provide hosting services so that the owner (John Lindsey) can share the information with us users. Second, Orionweb wants to keep the Web-site on their servers for the hosting fee income.

The files for vbulletin is relatively small, less than 40 MB for a newer version (4.2), the version e-budo runs now is a bit smaller I think (can check if necessary).

Short and simplified explanation regarding the technical bit.
One can in theory put all the data on a flash drive, but in order to view the content one need a server that runs mysql and php.
The presentation of the content is put together to the html you see in your web browser when you click a link. The script files (vbulletin files/software) tell the server what info to get from the database and put it together depending on your settings (one user can choose to show 10 posts per page in a thread and antoher user 20, some users have set to not view signatures, etc.)

Many thanks, Anders! Looks to be well under 1 GB, so now I'm really scratching my head as to why I couldn't capture everything as a PDF.
Any other ideas on how to capture everything as an archive, "just in case?"
