I don't know all of the names, but these are the ones i know (from the top of my head): Ryote-dori: Naname-uchi, Kote-hineri Hidari-eri-dori: Atemi to temple, Kote-hineri (take-down) Migi-eri-dori: Ago-tsuki (or tsuki-age), Kote-gaeshi Kataude-dori: Yoko-geri, Waki-gatame Ushiro-eri-dori, Atemi to solar plexus, Ude-gatame Ushiro-jime: Te-gatame (take-down) Kakae-dori: The lock is Ude-gatame, I have seen the name Kaiten-nage used for the "throw" Naname-uchi: Ago-tsuki (or tsuki-age), O-soto-otoshi Ago-tsuki: Gamnen-tsuki: Atemi to kidney, Hadaka-jime Mae-geri: Yoko-geri: Ryokuhi Tsukkake: Atemi to eyes, Te-gatame (take-down) choku-zuki: Atemi to uto, Waki-gatame naname-zuki: Kote-gaeshi Furi-age: Atemi to chin, O-soto-gari Furi-oroshi: Naname-uchi Morote-zuke: Shomen-zuke: Koshi-gamae: Haimen-zuke: Kote-gaeshi Hope this helps some... I thought I should at least name some of the (most common in judo) vital points with their japanese names: Kasumi (temple) Uto (between the eyes) Kachi-kake Tento (top of the head) sui-getsu (solar plexus) tsuri-gane (groin) Shitsu-kansetsu or Hiza-kansetsu (knee) Denko (kidney) Regards, Tommy |

thank you very much tommy. this helps me a great deal. i don't know why they would name the attacks. it is usally the defenses that are named.

I belive it's a rather good thing to name the attack. I don't know how it is in other koryu, but Tenjin Shinyo-ryu seams to name some of their technique in this way (using the attack as the name). I guess Kano used the same idea when he created Kime no Kata (and the Kodokan when they created Goshin-jutsu)... Tommy |
