Actually I don't think it's a Niou, but rather one of the Shitenou (四天王 ー four heavenly kings). Could be Bishamonten (毘沙門天)
Not this Tenshinsho Jigen-ryu though.
There are a few documents about various Hojutsu ryuha on this website.
Search for 砲術 and 19 documents come up.
This guy's blog also has a few interesting bits a few pages in.
Don't know much about Kyujutsu really, but Satsuma Heki Ryu 薩摩日置流 practice in full armour and also do group exercises in formation.
You can see them here
Good videos I guess, but I suppose nobody asked for permission before sticking them up on Youtube.
Bit of a grey area really. Performing an embu in front of a few hundred people is a little...

In Satsuma all samurai boys over the age of 6 participated in goju kyoiku (郷中教育), essentially local district schools spread throughout the domain.
They were required to study confucian classics,...

The tsuka for Satsuma goshirae are a bit longer than most nihonto, and they sometimes have curvature inverse to that of...
Interesting video. I also wondered what this would look like. The first pictures I saw of this habikito gekiken thing were in some kind of wrestling ring, so I thought it was a bit of a spectacle,...

The max blade length was supposed to be 2 shaku 3 sun 5 bu.
From looking at many surviving Satsuma koshirae it appears that the ruling was totally ignored in Satsuma.
Most koryu kenjutsu are suhada kenpo.
Also I have never seen Tennen Rishin-ryu doing any group kata. The might do Iai kata individually in a group, but there isn't any interaction between...

The big 武 with the rising sun is pretty tacky I reckon.
The caption says Kashima Shinto-ryu sword song.
Well I suppose it's possible to see some similarities if you look at them side by side. I don't really know much about Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Enpi, so I'll take your word for that. We did do embu right...
Jigen Ryu training consists of suburi, tategi uchi (striking a tree) and kata practice.
Jigen Ryu Enpi is not really directly related to Yagyu Ryu. It bears a link to Taisha Ryu, but the main...

I agree with what Josh is saying. While there is a wealth of koryu martial ats in Kumamoto, the best bet for a short stay might be to look for some gendai budo which you could potentially continue...
Well that's right next to Suizenji, which is where the Kumamoto Budokan is located. Don't know about the dorms.
Suizenji koen is a lovely Japanese garden btw.
There's also a nice sword shop...
If you are only coming for a year, don't expect to learn anything special while you train here.
Where in Kumamoto will you be based?
The schools that spring to mind in Kumamoto are
Taisha...

The text says Tennen Rishin Ryu Bojutsu.
Just found these pictures of the Bo Odori in Kuginono (North Kagoshima)...
In Kagoshima a method of weapons training for farmers disguised as a folk dance was created to teach rokushaku bo, sanjyaku bo (maybe sword) and a number of other implements including kama. There are...
I'm with Josh and Kent on this. You just have to know who to ask and were to look.
