Thank you.
Probably easiest to just give you the link to my (somewhat amateurish) site:

Hopefully, I'll be back in touch within the next year...
Best of luck...
Huh. I go past there multiple times a day when I'm back in the US visiting folks!
Would you mind some (respectful) kengaku (observing) next time I'm home?
And congrats on the dojo.

Couple of options:
1. 静水 Seisui = literally, "Quiet water"
2. 穏水 Onsui = literally, "Calm water"
I like # 2, but my (Japanese) wife prefers # 1, FWIW.
I think he's correct, but not in the way he thinks he is: Kata and "sparring" are unrelated, in that the first is about fighting, and the latter about playing a sport.
This (or more literally, "the 2nd") can be written 二世, and placed after the name (which is written in katakana). My understanding is that this may sound a bit overly grand (e.g., John Smith, the...
Happy to help, Tim.
Best,

Tim,
Like you, the idea that Chibana Sensei had another ryu-ha called Shindo-ryu is news to me. So much so that I find it highly unlikely.....
Ok, I just checked the flap of one Ushiro...
Thank you for your reply. I was aware of the history of Kosen Judo and the derivation of the word Kosen, as I had done a bit of previous research.
Actually, that previous research led me to...

Hi,
Can you make the picture larger? We may be able to read his name on his do-gi, or at least the name of the ryuha...

Secrets of the Samurai" is, hands down, absolutely one of the worst books about budo ever written. The authors are obviously armchair theorists and academics who, as far as I can tell, did no...
Mr. Lowry,
Here's what I found in my dictionary (Kokugo Dai Jiten Dictionary. Shinsou-ban (Revised edition) © Shogakukan 1988/?‘Œê‘厫“T?i?V‘•”Å?j©?¬ŠwŠÙ 1988)

Earl,
Thanks for explaining my story...You did a better job than I could have.
Incidentally, I also had a similar "nyuuyoku" experience.:)
Best,
Mark
Hi Earl, hi Tony,
Yeah, your comments pretty much sum it up! :(

Ok, here's one of mine.
Not long after I move to Hiroshima, my wife-to-be and I are walking through the shopping district one Sunday. She is kindly allowing me to speak Japanese with her. She...
Ellis,
Thanks for your explanation. You even managed to answer some questions I hadn't yet asked.
On reading your response I'm struck by 2 things: 1) the similarity with the therapist / client...
It just so happens that I asked my (Japanese) wife this question this past weekend. Her guess was that it came from the idea that Vikings "take whatever and as much as you want."
If I get a...
Hi Ellis,
Thanks for responding.
Mainly I wanted to ask you about your (intriguing, at least to me) statement that "one's teacher is always functioning as uke at every moment of contact." ...
Hi Ellis,
Wondering if you'd be willing to address a question or two on your Skoss III essay material here? Please let me know if that'd be ok with you.
Thanks,
Mark
