Well, we do all look alike...
I've got to second Mark's recommendation on Draeger's books. If he had published his laundry list, I'd probably buy it but his books on judo kata and technique are simply head and shoulders above...
"Mark's accusation concerning the legal use of the title "professor" is a serious one. I would like to hear and learn more about this.
Jeff Cook"
I don't think accusation is the right term......
Please give Chris Magyar my regards. He's an excellent instructor. We're still running the Winter Camp down here and you're always welcome. Larry Beard will be hosting a Summer Camp on the JSU...
Oops! Gene is a he, not a she. Sorry for the mistake.
Keith,
Do you train with Chris Magyar?
Mark
Gene Gabel teaches iaido in Mobile, AL. She has a small but very dedicated group that trains at a local YMCA.
"Jaymariii I live in NW Houston and train at TNT jujitsu. It's in the NW area. Here is the website - http://www.tntjujitsu.com/."
Do you really refer to your Sensei as your Master? I saw that...
Theron Larroquette is an exceptional Judoka and instructor. The last I heard, his dojo was in the process of relocating. It would be worth the effort to track him down.
Supposedly I look like either Gene Hackman or Kevin Smith. I'm not thrilled with either choice. However, when I ran a second photo, it offered up George Westinghouse and (I kid you not) Morihei...
I've seen listings for Gregory Clark teaching Daito Ryu here in Alabama a few times on the 'net but I haven't fun across any contact information. Does anyone know where he teaches and who he is...
LIVING THE MARTIAL WAY by Forrest Morgan
Anything by Donn Draeger
Anything by Diane Skoss
THE OVERLOOK MARTIAL ARTS READER by Randy Nelson
Going back to television shows and their use/misuse of martial arts and oriental themes, I can't remember which tv show it was but I got a big kick out of a Yakuza godfather named O San. I'm hoping...
If my ex-wife is right, I was doomed long before I mentioned the Scottish play.
In the late 70s I was visiting Edinburgh during the Intl Shakespeare Festival. Some friends thought it would be great to attend and when we went to buy tickets everything was sold out except for...
George's response just reinforces the positive comments made about him. From my limited experience with him, I believe him to be upfront and honest and doing his best to support Jujutsu. There are...
I was teaching a seminar in Biloxi a few years ago and notice blood seeping out from under a bandage one of the students was wearing on his chest. When I asked if he was o.k., he said he was fine...
Randy,
I'm really glad you're enjoying the book. I've gotten a contract for the next one and it will focus on the weapons of Jujutsu.
Mark
The book is published by FIFTH ESTATE, a small publishing house in N. Alabama. They've mostly focused on religious material so my book was a bit different from their usual format.
While Mr....
The book is JUJUTSU: LEGACY OF THE SAMURAI and while the book is not specifically about Mr. Marshall, I do discuss his teaching style and approach to learning. On the back cover I have a photo of...
He trains under Van Bushnell. Their style is heavily influenced by Yoshinkan but I don't think that's their primary affiliation.
We're always glad to have guests on the mat.
Hudson Harris, another Yoseikan instructor, was a guest sensei at a seminar I hosted in Birmingham a few months ago. It's always a pleasure to...
Nope, you're right. My info was out of date. Sorry for the mis-information.
Greg Faulkner, Van Bushnell and Tim Morgan in Birmingham.
Phillip Norrell in Mobile.
Capital City Aikido in Montgomery.
Jonathan Mayhall in Jasper.
Mike Fore in Tuscaloosa.
Hudson Harris in...
I'm not qualified to give much info on the yari or naginata but just for future reference, it's not yarijutsu but rather sojutsu.
Alabama was spared the worst of the storm. The Gulf Coast area was without power and many of us had to boil water for a few days but I'm not aware of any significant damage or loss of life. The SK...
