    Nope.

Not only do curved swords have more cutting surface per unit of length (to greater or lesser degrees of course, depending on the curvature), they also tend to concentrate the initial contact...

They are curvy because the curvature aids the cut. They are pointy so that people can be stabbed with them.

Larger varieties might be a bit too cumbersome for use in the smaller Japanese homes,...

As you've pointed out, the practice seems quite ahistorical. I've never heard that one was "not allowed to take daito into someones house" (though I am aware of contexts/places where certain weapons,...

    one of my preferred routines:

    1. Wake up (6:00 or 5:00 am)
    2. drink water, maybe eat something, and pack lunch
    3. walk/jog 4 miles to bus stop

    my thoughts

I think there is something to be learned from both video clips posted so far.

In reference to the naginata vs. katana video:

I saw some very good maneuvers that I have used successfully in...

    my thoughts

My teacher has always told me that ninjutsu is ninjutsu standing up, sitting down, lying down, in the water, on land, etc.

How to do something most efficiently, safely, quickly, powerfully, etc.

I'm not really sure what to say.....

I think this is why we train to use the entire body.

Against a mountain of muscle, it seems it would be necessary.
  11. Oops

    I forgot to add:

Both training methods are necessary. However, too much kata can lead to false techniques(distances, timings, etc.). Too much randori will solidify in your muscle memory situations...

    Very interesting discussion......

    The way I see it:

Kata training, in its beginning stages, is anatomical training. Learning what happens to the body when you move certain parts in certain...

On the weight distribution of Jumonji no Kamae......

I think it depends on what kind of movement one is doing and at what point one begins the technique from. I've seen Jumonji no Kamae occur with...

    my thoughts

Jumonji no kamae is part of shizen no kamae....in my opinion.

    ????

Methinks that laziness is natural. Leaning on something is just a different way of supporting one's weight. What is unnatural about that?

In the Shinden Fudo Ryu there is only shizen no kamae....

    Japanese Armor attributes

One might also consider that the inside of the forearm is sometimes without protection when one uses Japanese armor. Turning the arms as in Jumonji no Kamae gives extra protection by exposing armor...
