Thousands of foreign teachers have been made jobless and face expulsion from Japan after the country's biggest chain of English language...
Anyone have an opinion on Kondansha Int'l's Japanese for Professionals and Dictionary of Basic Japanese Idioms?
I've been browsing through sample pages of the latter at Amazon and find it...
At any speed, it's up to you whether or not your training drills have aliveness. I'll pull out a quote I read that helped my own training:
Design the Document
The newsletter needs to employ more elements of document design. Break long articles up into subsections with appropriate subheadings. Consider using pull-quotes to garner...
News of this sort is slow. The Japanese Archaeological Association's English page has nothing for 2007: http://wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp/jaa2/index.html

That's hilarious. I'm going to start a synchronized sushi eating team.
Tabemasu.
Naw. That one was where the guy didn't remember his past and was raised / trained by a Ninja who doubled as a gardener for a bunch of other Ninjas.
I have no problem with foreigners who want their name in kanji. But hanko and dogi are different than body art.
Here's the problem I have with this. On this site, they have my name (Adam)...
I'd be skeptical of a "master calligrapher" who wants to translate Western names into Japanese without following convention (katakana). If you don't mind me asking, who is this person?

My great-uncle Ken was missing half his finger. My brother and I used to joke that he was yakuza but he really lost it due to a machine accident. Supposedly, he was in line to become a kamikaze...
Without having to borrow from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, Japan does indeed have its own literary history of suicide. Chikamatsu Monzaemon's plays about love suicide dramatized the notion of...
English has counters; they're referred to as measure words in linguistics. While 'pack' of dogs or 'murder' of crows are collective nouns, a head of cattle is singular. Usually they're implied.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of the distinction. Not affiliated with the Sanshinkai either, just learned Mitsuzuka's Shindo Munen Ryu kata as part of a different iai curriculum.
Would it be correct to...

Couldn't find a video of the kata.
Evidently ippon ( 一本 ) can mean:
one long object;
a book;
one version;
a blow;
a full-fledged geisha
me ( 目 ) can stand for classification or order.
ipponme and so on probably meant...
Don't be alarmed, it's just a phase. Backwards hakama is just as common of a phenomena as backwards baseball caps are. He'll grow out of it.
Kuro-Hitsuji is a good mutton place in Nakameguro. Not a dojo but worth checking out. My mouth waters just thinking about it.
I figure I'd put it out there and see what responses come.
The role of teacher in the martial arts is very well-defined. The person holding the menkyo is the teacher. Students are everyone else...
Or the reverse:
"Ethiopia filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the names of three coffee-producing regions: Yirgacheffe, Harrar and Sidamo, where Fero is located."

They're listed as one of the official study groups of Mugai Ryu. I highly recommend you check it out.
Muso Shinden Ryu iai is practiced at Multnomah Aikikai. I'd go to either of these places, see if it's your cup of tea. If they're not, ask if they know anyone else in the area. Alternatively, if...
This question is very difficult to answer. Personally, I only have experience with two different styles and that experience isn't in-depth enough for me to give you an intelligent answer.
They...
Tony Alvarez of Senpokan Dojo (bigtony@senpokan.com) practices Mugai Ryu in the L.A. area. I know that Kuroda-sensei and Niina Gosoke end up going to California once a year.
