Dan Gobillot is a good friend of mine and a super guy. Marion Taylor is also good.
Paul Sylvain was the senior instructor of the NA San Shin Kai until his death in 1996.
Good luck, and tell us...
I'm not sure if Nakayama actually became head of the Ryu, or was just Menkyo Kaiden. There is an excellent video in the Nihon no Kobudo series, and Kendo World Magazine had a good article a while...
Actually, it's not. This is the "Shindo Munen Ryu" Iai that was reconstructed by Mitsuzuka Takeshi(a student of Nakayama) from a makimono that was actually titled "Hosoda Ryu". It is commonly...

Actually, these kata are Okuden, but it is true that the scenario is unimportant. The purpose (of some of these) is to train you to work within certain spatial confines/obstacles, using the previously...
Don,
I was sad to find this out this morning as well. What is your connection to Sensei?
Mr Alexanian,
I understand. Thanks for the kind reply.
Mr Alexanian,
Thanks for the response. I appreciate the insight that you have brought to this. Is this publication that you mention available?
I raised this question a few years ago and got nowhere. Perhaps now that Mugai ryu is more popular, some insight will come out of this. I had originally thought that these names were borrowed by...
I have a single-weave,unbleached white Kendo keikogi that I have used for Iai for a number of years now. I got it from Mugendo Budogu, and it's pretty much my favorite keikogi.
I practice Muso Shinden Ryu Iai in Concord. Feel free to PM for information.
It's taught in the dojo where I train, but I haven't learned it yet(new to SMR),so I can't really comment on it otherwise.
There is a MJER Jikishinkai study group across the river in Keene(sorry, I don't have contact info). Also, I teach MSR in Concord,NH(a little over an hour away, and there is another MSR dojo in...
It certainly does work with hakama,I use it exclusively. Maybe it isn't as good if your hakama doesn't have a hera, but I think it would still work. The nice thing about it is that,if the obi loosens...
Brian,
You're right,"close",like anything else,is relative. That's why I said "at least in MSR". What I meant was that sometimes looks like hands "together" is just somebody managing within the...
Jeff,
Mitsuzuka Sensei most certainly has never taught students to grip the tsuka with the hands close together. If the tsuka is the proper size for the student,it should allow for at least 2...
Just to clarify, Mitsuzuka Sensei does not teach gripping the tsuka with the hands close together.
That's correct,Earl, but in MSR it's Inyo Shintai, and the 'hands together grip' is NOT the standard grip in MSR.
Todd,
Are you still in NH?
Dave is a friend of mine and a great instructor. You can't go wrong.
Bushikan,
E-budo rules require you to sign all posts with your real name.
With that out of the way, perhaps nobody you spoke with knows Mitsuzuka Takashi, because his name is actually Takeshi.

It has actually been pretty common to see Japanese exponents of Ryukyu Kobudo demonstrating in hakama. I'm thinking not only of Hayashi and Kuniba, but also Motokatsu Inoue and his son, whose name...
Mitsuzuka Takeshi taught MSR and Jodo in France a number of years ago. To the best of my knowledge,he never lived there. I don't know who Mitsuzuka Odo is.
"Flashing Steel" poorly,IMHO, illustrates one version of the Tachuchi No Kurai. It does not show Tsumeai No Kurai. "Shokai Iai" shows both sets fairly well. If interested, I have a copy of "Shokai...
