Thought about coming down from Tokyo, but work has been brutal - might not have time for it
I quite enjoyed:
Which they failed to do, as:
The irony is killing me
Here in Japan anything with the Shorinji Kempo logo, or about Shorinji Kempo has "Shorinji Kempo Unity" as the group behind it. I believe by having all business related functions done through a...
It's gone rather quiet in here, I was hoping for at least a "shut up Leon" :(
Having spent some time last night poking around on the internet I have some additional comments:
Official websites - each federation and branch should have its own website, based on a template...
To get started I've been making notes of what I would like to see from an open Shorinji Kempo resource:
1) Basic Japanese Terminology - counting, basic phrases (rei, naorei, kesshu, jodan, chudan,...
I personally think the best thing would be to have it locked down and controlled by Hombu, with access requiring a login based on your kenshi ID code - a system they already have in place -...
Got a very long way to go, but the first step has been taken!
As of about 10 minutes ago, digitalkyohan.com and digitalkyohan.org are live and active! (And also very, very empty)
Here is where...
This has always been my major disappointment with SK reference material and why I've kept lots of notes and my kamokuhyo looks like a mess.
I tried asking last time - sent an email with all my details and didn't get a reply, but they did contact my doin-cho to confirm I trained there... After that I decided I would just do it and keep my...
Time for Round 2.
I've been out of training for a while, getting fat and wallowing in my own self-pity, and I need to do some study to get back into the swing of things.
Something that has...
Oh, yeah. I think the only glove I'd worn are really thin padded ones so I don't make a mess of my knuckles on the chest protector, but not big boxing gloves.
These are older university taikai...
I'll need to dig out my notes, but Kaiso did say "if you want to learn to fight, look somewhere else".
And I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at - the first video looks pretty much like...
My general opinion is that if you understand the mechanics behind the technique and execute it correctly, any small variances are perfectly acceptable. You cannot apply a single technique to other...
Its very high on my 'to-do' list while I'm still in Japan...
I asked some senior kenshi if they knew anything about dokko techniques and got blank stares in return. Anyone even seen anything done...
Probably the best part of training in Japan is the amount of access you get to different sensei who all have their own personal quirks. Some will enjoy juho and have some interesting insights or...
Generally the weakest part of randori (for practice) is the kogeki - you need to mix things up so the other person can properly respond.
A friend of mine is coming back to training - I'm thinking...
The dojo search tool on the official SK website is pretty good - you can quickly find a dojo that is close or has training on the days you want.
Usually after Busen each month we'll go back to the dojo/doin and tell everyone else about the facinating thing we've learnt, and 15minutes will be put aside for us to practice it. Like Jeremy says,...
Why do you think Shorinji all about "the character of the person"?
This sort of stuff isn't surprising, even baseball clubs in schools have mortalities where the coach or older students have...
I'm probably just biased because I trained in a JHS, the closest neighboring clubs were also JHS, and I've participated in some of the local JHS/HS taikai in Tokyo/Kanto.
This annoys me too. Much of it is because of the tightening of the "rules" - I'm tempted to find a partner who doesn't care and we'll just make up an embu based on whatever.
As long as we don't have competitions with ladders it's pretty safe ;)
Whaaaaa?
You realise there is enough junior kenshi they have their own taikai :D
You still see it being used from time to time - the number of rings (4, 6 or 12) have symbolic meanings, and the noise they make is distinctive to either attract attention (hey I'm a monk!) or scare...
