I always wondered how one can reasonably move a millstone with a tunfa. This picture of a 19th century Chinese mill gives a possible answer...

Somewhere, I have several photos taken of actual millstones taken at the Ryukyu Mura (an historic village, like Colonial Williamsburg in the USA) on Okinawa. I will see if I can't dig them up and post them here.

Hi Doug,

in Ryűkyű Mura, did they show how the millstones were operated and were they all of the same kind?

As I recall, there was one in actual working order and my photo was rather dark. I have several good shots of older millstones, taken outside. I will make a point to dig those up this week.
