I will be moving to San Diego, CA next year, and should be staying in that area for at lest the next 5 years. Is there any Koryu Bujutsu there? I am mostly interested in Jujutsu/Aikijujutsu as well as kenjutsu. Also, if there is any Shinto Muso Ryu Jojutsu there, I would love to know about it.

I have done searches, but cannot seem to come up with anything substantial. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

Mr. Marquay,

For Aikijujutsu instruction I would contact Mr. James Williams of Bugei.com or his dojo "Dojo of the four winds". (http://www.dojoofthefourwinds.com)

As for Kenjutsu, there is a Suio Ryu study group in SD. Suio Ryu is a Sogo Bujutsu, which includes Iai, Ken, Jo and other weaponry. Check the sword arts forum for contact information, you can find a link to one of the threads here. (http://www.e-budo.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15877)

As for Shinto Muso Ryu Jo, I believe Shimabukuro Sensei teaches it in San Diego area. He also teaches Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu. You can find more information about his dojo here. (http://www.jikishin-kai.com/)

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Steven

Try this thread. Somebody just recently asked the same question.

While there is a bunch of posts that aren't really related to what koryu are available in San Diego, there are also a bunch of posts about which Koryu are available in San Diego, so it should be a good resource.

Hello Again,

Although I was the last to post my situation has changed slightly in that I can firmly say that on Wednesday nights, from 8:00 until 11:00, a Suio Ryu study group has been established in Solana Beach, California. Solana Beach is immediately north of Del Mar, being 20 miles north from downtown San Diego, just off the 5 freeway.)

For those unfamiliar with the school under Katsuse Soke the Suio Ryu curriculum includes, among others, techniques of iaijutsu (sword drawing art), kumi iai (paired iai practice), kenpo (kenjutsu), naginatajutsu (halberd art), jojutsu (staff art), kogusoku (grappling), wakizashi (short sword techniques) and kusarigamma (sickle and chain).

Any one interested is welcome to join in. Please feel free to contact me at SuioRyuUSA@AOL.COM (until the web site gets up and running.)

Thanks for your patience!

Hi all. I just moved to San Diego for school and I was wondering if anyone could recomend a good school. I have already checked out a few schools, but they are either to far away (I don't have a car) or they're asking for way to much money. I'm primarly interested in unarmed arts (jujutsu, aikijutsu) and since I'm walking every where, I would like it to be close to San Diego State. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Matt,

Even though you have been recommended to come see me, you note said you needed something close to the campus of San Diego State. I am about 25 miles away (James is even further). MUCH closer to you is the home dojo of Chiba Sensei's San Diego Aikikai. (It is at 3844 Adams Avenue, just south of the 15 and 8 interchange.) Check out this site --

www.usafwr.org/sandiego/index.htm

He also instructs in some sword, based on MSR.

Good Luck!
