Good points, Rick. As the martial arts have moved increasingly away from "self defense," some of the differences you bring up can be critical. I'd add that you should:

1. Ditch the dogi and train in your regular clothes - NOT your comfortable clothes, your workout clothes, or your "fat" pants that let you move, but the clothes AND SHOES, that you wear every day. This will be an eye opener for some.

2. Practice with the weapons you carry (if you carry). That folder in the front pocket of many people, and most martial artists, it seems, deploys, feels, and moves differently than a wooden tanto stuck in your obi.
