    Welcome back to the Go forum, everyone!

    Whilst E-budo was languishing in cyber-recovery ... I took the opportunity to improve the quality of my Go board graphics (courtesy of Jansteen's site http://www.cwi.nl/people/jansteen/go/ under link sgf conversion).

    Allow me to post 3 very easy tsume go (life and death) problems with the new graphics:

    These problems deal with 4 space eyes. What happens when: 1) black moves first, 2) white moves first. (These are very fundamental problems.)

    Let me know how the graphics are!

    Enjoy!

    In all three problems black lives if he moves first and dies if white moves first by either forming or preventing two eyes. The graphics are superb! Please post more tsumego. Please make them much more difficult. Thank you.

    Jared,

    Glad you like the graphics ... I will definately post some more difficult tsumego problems. You may want to take a second look at these problems, though ... you were for the most part incorrect (except for c, which is actually tricky - unintentionally so).

    Enjoy!

    You're correct a is unconditionally dead and b is unconditionally alive. I should have looked closer. I thought I had it at a glance.

    I mean a is alive and b is dead.

    Cool

    I'm writing this before I've looked at the other answers...my go skills are meager and it's been 30 yrs but here goes:

    Black to move first;
    A) safyties up with a stone at T10 or 11.
    B) blackhas no hope
    C) must place at K3

    White goes first;
    A) cn't win, protect edges
    B) force blck to fill in by going anywhere inside
    C) white to K3 wins

    Great analysis Sochin!

    I'll point out a few things:

    Problem c - This ended up being trickier than I intended! The reason? There is a white stone on M4. If the stone on M4 was black. then black wouldn't need to play (ie. white plays and then black can respond for life). Since the stone at M4 is white, black must play for life at k4 or k3. If white plays first and plays at k3, black would die.

    As is ... black can place on K3 or K4 for life (if Black k4, White k3, then Black L3 lives).

    Problem b - because black is dead (ie. white can respond by killing wherever black plays ... providing white doesn't allow black to play twice without answering), white need not waste a move and should play elsewhere. If black plays then white can answer to kill.

    Enjoy!
