Here is one of the first secret Manaka seminars. It was in Atlanta around 1983 or 1984 I think.

    Hey there,

A stupid question just came into my mind.

Is Stephen Hayes ex-military, or was this common dress for the ninjutsu folks in the eighties?

I'm not a Takamatsuden student, so I don't know anything of the Bujinkan, Jinenkan or Genbukan histories or practitioners/teachers beyond what little I pick up on the forums, and from the few books I've seen.

There are many people more qualified to answer...but everytime our Shihan play old footage for us....people are either in fatigues, or those awful AWMA NINJA OUTFITS...Shihan Legare refers to the footage as ... "Those Larry Beaver Days"...
And no I do not believe Mr Hayes was military....(Could be wrong though!)

    -Cool pics though!

    Default cammo

Yes, everyone wore cammo back then. The first Stephen Hayes seminar in Houston, I saw so much cammo I thought it was a paramilitary organization. Of course John,Bob and Kelly were in the military so the BDU's made since. We also wore black SWAT BDU's. They sure held up better than Gi's. At the 1984 ninja festival everyone from TX wore desert cammo. It was in 1986 at the first Tai Kai we started wearing black gi's. Some guys even had cammo "ninja" gi's.

Mr John, I believe that's Paul in that photo.. with the thing in his mouth.. Remember he came to my dojo in 1987..? I gave him a cool painting.. we when to eat at Tia's after.. Mr Chuck had to much to drink.. I'm sure Jamie would remember.. he always remebers drinking parties.. Wasn't this the time we did the demo downtown Dallas Too?

The camo was very normal in the 80's..
The Dallas SOI did wear them and the BDU belts were white or green to show their ranking. Mainly black BDU's were worn. But some did wear Camo ones too.. as well as I did.. I dislike the doji.. booo..
I still rather wear BDU's today over those silly ninja suits..

I believe the camo died out as a normal dress in 1988.. after the LA taikai...

It was a big deal to wear a red T-shirt under the BDU's or doji top.. looked cool..

I remember the demo all the guys did in Jan/1984 in Houston for Hayes shihan.. all the auto guns and rappelling off the wall area to the ground and killing one another.. it was way to loud ! But cool.

I have some cool photos from that time too.. I'll have to look..

I was watching a tape last night of the Albquerque demo we did..
And the tape alos had some Butch Johnson on it here in Dallas with his green belt on..1990.. he wasn't in the demo because he was a beginner.. But you, Jamie, Bill, Abi, Dale, Brian, Alan, Andre, Eddie, Don, myself, and etc.. were all in it..

    old times..

Thats Paul! What ever happened to him?

Here is a group photo from the first SKH seminar in Houston, TX. I think it was 1983? I had to cut the picture in half to get a good look at all the faces. Ralph and I are in there .
