Default Any civil-war buffs here? Need some ID-help

    Hey there.

In my free time I do alot of reading about the ACW and I recently joined a Flickr-group sharing photos from the war.

We recently recieved a photo of an officer, a Colonel by the looks of it, with no ID whatsoever and we cannot even be certain what branch of the service he belongs to. (artillery, cavalry, infantry or other) This can normally be read from the badge the officer & soldier wears on his hat, but in this case the photo is too garbled to make out. Does anyone here have sharp eyes to make out what branch this man is in?

Or if you happen to know the identity of the man in question that would be even better :-).

I've got several books on the subject, most from Osprey publishing. I'm also using several websites with preserved corps badges, and other various markings.

Just a brief selection of the sites I usually go to when I'm trying to find a certain uniform feature:
    http://www.usregulars.com/Regulations%20Home.html
    http://howardlanham.tripod.com/unireg.htm
    http://howardlanham.tripod.com/linkgr3/link151.html
    http://www.braceface.com/medical/index.html

I admit I havent read my books or the site cover-to-cover with a magnifying glass to know all badges by heart, and I cannot find any matching hat-symbols & badges to the one in the photo.

You have already hit Howard Lanham which is the one I would have recommended. I'll look around to see if there is anything else. Have you tried any of the search options over at the Library of Congress or the Smithsonian Institute? There used to be one out of Atlanta or Texas, I think, but if memory serves that was only for Confederate forces.
