From zero till dan ranked

Hi, what is the average time to get ranked from white till black[shodan] in Judo?

Maybe this is a double topic or anything that is asked too many times.

Not being too overconfident to be in 3.5 years till shodan but, just need an indication.

Depends on how good your are. Some places you can go to a promotional tournament and destroy everybody you can be shodan in a year. I personally don't like that because you can master one technique and know hardly anything else and win. But teacher's rank supposedly doesn't begin until 4th dan so in theory I guess it is OK.

Some people 3, or 5 or 10 years. It depends on how good you are. You need to be able to pass the exam.

Also depends on the time in grade requirements of your local organization. In my club, it's 7 years minimum to ikkyu. You then have to rack up enough points to test shodan, so theoretically 8 years but realistically 9.

I was talking about judo, not kendo. Kendo is actually a very short time, in most federations you can get shodan in about 2 years of hobby practice. Shodan in kendo is very much a beginner's rank.

Midwest Kendo Federation in the AUSKF does allow for testing of Nikyu and Ikkyu. But the first REAL test is Shodan. I watched the Nikyu test that was hard. It was all on etiqutte and equipment. You physically had to fold the hakama. I hang mine on a clothes hanger.

If you took the Ikkyu test and failed they made you Nikyu so very few took the Nikkyu test. The Shodan test was easier than the Nikyu test.

I know PNKF takes a while too as they have formal kyu exams. In Canada ikkyu is the first national exam, most people take it after a year and then shodan the following year. Japan is the same or faster, adult beginners can probably get kendo shodan in a year. Judo too, for that matter.

Kids are a different story, they are judged more harshly than adults for the same rank and usually have been practising longer.

I think in Japan 1-1.5 years after 1st kyu.

You need to find out what organization (USJF, USJA, USA Judo, etc) your club belongs to and their requirements. There is usually time in grade requirements for each rank on the way to Shodan. If your skills and knowledge are good you can skip a rank or two at the beginning. But again that depends on the organization. Time in rank can be reduced by points in competition, time spent as a referee, etc. The exam for Shodan can be grueling and you really have to know your stuff. I assisted a 7th dan in the examination of a Shodan candidate from our club and he was tested for an hour and a half on the extent of his knowledge and ability to perform techniques. So be prepared.
