    Default Shotokan Seisan kata

    Hi !
Simple question, from what source did Sesan Kata come into Shotokan ?
Was it originally in Gichin Funakoshis teachings coming from Anko Ituso or Asato ?

    Hello,

There are several "opinions" on that matter; however, my best guess is that G. Funakoshi (1868-1957) learnt it from A. Asato (1828-1906).

The main problem with your question is that G. Funakoshi wrote no genealogies of all his kata. Therefore I am writing "my best guess"...

Great question. Answer is very elusive however. You might enjoy an article on ikigaiway.com titled "A Historical Walking Tour of Seisan Kata". Seisan shows up in a large number of styles/schools on Okinawa. Sometimes you have to use a little imagination to see connections. Odo Sensei's is unique as far as I have seen. The Goju and Uechi versions are not very similar to the Shorin versions. You also have to watch out for false trails. The first version of Seisan I learned was from Kise Sensei who traces his art to Sokon Matsumura. So I innocently thought what I learned was a very old version. A couple of years later Kise Sensei published a book where he states that he adapted/created a number of kata to round out his system to be like the other Shorin styles and one of them is Seisan. If you happen to find any data written or otherwise on you question please post. I am sure a lot of us are interested. Thanks, Len McCoy
