There has been a lot of discussion regarding various Ryu, and sogo bujutsu being a comprehensive training method.
There is documentation that Samurai were trained in various battlefield skills necessary to operate; weapons, horseback riding, swimming, archery, etc.
However, what I wonder is how did a clan go about training its Ashigaru for combat, and what training did they receive and who was responsible for training them? Did they get an abbreviated course in just using the spear? Did they train in peacetime at the clan's training halls? Did they train themselves?
Were Ryu actually Ryu as we think of Ryu being comprehensive battlefield arts before they split up into just sword schools? Or did clans just have a myriad of instructors teaching their specialties to different groups of Samurai and or Ashigaru?
I've tried looking around for more information on this subject, but I can't find much. Does anyone have any insight?
